Polysomnography (PSG)

“Sleep monitoring technique in which different variables are simultaneously recorded, like electroencephalographic activity, ocular activity, muscular and cardiorespiratory variables”. 
During this study, are also registered video images, temperature and esophageal PH. This study has to be done in a specialized center of diagnose and sleep treatment, and it has a duration of approximately 7-8 hours. To accomplish it, electrodes are places on the chin, scalp and in the outer edge of the patient’s eyelids; also some bands are placed in the abdomen to register heart rate and breathing. 
Nowadays, polysomnography is considered as a useful tool to evaluate sleep disorders and related pathologies.


Indications to perform a polysomnography:

1. Lack of sleep (Insomnia):
a. Respiratory problems (apnea)
b. Periodic leg movements (nocturnal myoclonus)
c. Restless Leg Syndrome
d. Pshycologic alterations
e. Depression

2. Excessive sleepiness (hypersomnia):
a. Sleep Apnea Syndrome
b. Narcolepsy
c. Other hypersomnias

3. Parasomnia (pathological phenomenon that occur while sleeping)
a. Somnambulism, night terrors, behavior disorders during night
b. Epilepsy 
c. Alterations in the electroencephalogram of epileptics that do not show in wakefulness
